The Commissioners from the new US capital saw an opportunity, and reached out to offer a group of Edinburgh stonemasons generous wages to defy the travel ban and head to America.
Consequently, with travel costs covered and the war ensuring that no grand new construction work would happen in Edinburgh, ‘The Athens of the North’ (as it was known globally, for its neoclassical architecture) a group of six Scottish stonemasons travelled to the USA in 1794.
The rest is history. Their skilled craftsmanship has left an indelible mark – one of the world’s most well-known and iconic residential addresses (in continuous use till today) – the American White House!
